2026 Honda Prelude revives a classic name with hybrid power and Type R precision

Honda has officially reintroduced the Prelude at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, signalling the revival of one of its most iconic nameplates. The 2026 Honda Prelude blends the brand’s long-standing “joy of driving” philosophy with cutting-edge hybrid-electric technology, marking its first-ever electrified iteration.

At the heart of the new Prelude is Honda’s two-motor hybrid-electric system, shared with the latest Civic hybrid. The setup pairs a 2.0-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine with two powerful electric motors, producing a combined 200 HP and 315 Nm of torque. This configuration promises smooth, responsive acceleration while maintaining impressive fuel efficiency.

For driving enthusiasts, the Prelude debuts Honda’s new S+ Shift mode, a system that simulates the experience of a performance transmission. The feature incorporates simulated gear changes, rev-matched downshifts and enhanced engine sounds for a more engaging drive.

The Prelude also benefits from components derived from the Civic Type R, including its dual-axis strut front suspension, adaptive dampers and Brembo four-piston front brakes. These enhancements, combined with a four-mode drive system – Comfort, GT, Sport and Individual, allow the coupe to balance everyday comfort with spirited handling.

Inside, the Prelude features a driver-focused cockpit with premium materials and sporty design cues. Highlights include leather-trimmed sport seats with houndstooth inserts, a flat-bottom steering wheel and a digital instrument cluster. A 9-inch HD touchscreen with Google built-in, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a Bose eight-speaker audio system come standard.

The coupe’s sleek exterior design is marked by a low, wide stance, double-bubble roof and flush door handles for aerodynamic efficiency. Distinctive blue accents and Brembo callipers add to its sporty aesthetic. Five color options will be available, including a new Winter Frost Pearl finish.

Safety remains a core element of the Prelude’s engineering, with the Honda Sensing suite of driver-assistance technologies standard across all models. This includes Collision Mitigation Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist and Blind Spot Monitoring, among others.

The 2026 Prelude joins Honda’s expanding lineup of hybrid models alongside the Civic, Accord and CR-V. With its mix of hybrid performance, advanced technology and classic Honda driving dynamics, the new Prelude represents a modern take on the brand’s sporty heritage.
