Toyota’s 2026 Hilux debuts with electric, diesel and petrol options plus modern tech
Toyota is set to launch the ninth generation Hilux, marking one of the most significant updates to its iconic pickup in years. First introduced in 1968, the Hilux has earned a reputation for durability but its current model dating back to 2015 was due for a major overhaul. The redesigned 2026 version brings fresh styling, new technology and for the first time, a fully electric variant.
The battery-electric Hilux will headline the new lineup, featuring dual motors powered by a 59.2-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Toyota estimates a range of around 149 miles (240 km) under the WLTP cycle. The system delivers a combined torque output of roughly 474 Nm, enabling a payload of 715 kg and towing capacity of up to 1600 kg.
Externally, the new Hilux adopts a more angular, modern design similar to Toyota’s Tacoma. The electric model sports a closed-off front fascia and exclusive wheel design, while combustion-engine versions retain a traditional grille for cooling. All variants feature a new rear deck step, redesigned side steps and bold Toyota lettering across the tailgate. In Europe, Toyota will offer only the double-cab configuration, reflecting customer preferences, though single-cab models will continue in markets like Australia.
Inside, the Hilux receives a complete redesign inspired by the latest Land Cruiser. The cabin now features dual 12.3-inch displays, durable materials and a practical layout with physical buttons for key functions. Toyota has balanced modern tech with user-friendly controls, maintaining the truck’s reputation for rugged utility.
While the electric Hilux headlines the launch, Toyota is keeping its proven combustion engines in the mix. The 2.8-litre diesel now with mild-hybrid assistance remains a key option, offering superior towing 3500 kg and payload capacity 1000 kg compared to the electric version. Non-electrified diesel and 2.7-litre gasoline engines will also be available in select regions.
Looking ahead, Toyota plans to introduce a hydrogen fuel cell Hilux in 2028, reaffirming its commitment to diverse powertrain technologies. The company continues to invest in hydrogen alongside partners such as BMW, which is preparing its own iX5 Hydrogen SUV for launch in the same year.
Technological updates include electric power steering (for Western Europe), an expanded Toyota Safety Sense suite and over-the-air software updates. Features such as blind spot monitoring, driver attention detection and Safe Exit Assist further enhance safety. The electric version introduces a shift-by-wire drive selector, while all trims include wireless phone charging and new rear USB ports.
Sales of the new Hilux will begin in Europe this December, with production of the mild-hybrid diesel variant starting in spring 2026. Despite the excitement around electrification, Toyota expects the diesel model to remain the best-seller thanks to its balance of performance and practicality.
With over 21 million units sold across more than 180 markets, the Hilux remains one of Toyota’s most successful global models. The next generation aims to preserve that legacy while embracing the demands of a rapidly evolving automotive landscape.
