Toyota Land Cruiser FJ to launch in India by 2028 with hybrid options

The much-anticipated Toyota Land Cruiser FJ has made its global debut at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 in Tokyo, with confirmation that the SUV will reach Indian shores by the end of 2028. Interestingly, India will not just be a key market but also a production hub for the new model, which is expected to be one of the first vehicles manufactured at Toyota’s upcoming plant in Chatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra.

Built on Fortuner’s Proven Platform but No Diesel Option

The Land Cruiser FJ will share its tough IMV ladder-frame chassis with the Fortuner, Innova Crysta and Hilux. However, unlike these models, Toyota will not offer a diesel engine in the FJ lineup. Instead, buyers in India can expect a choice of a 2.7-litre petrol engine delivering around 163 HP and 246 Nm, a strong hybrid, and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) option. The showcased version featured a six-speed automatic transmission and a part-time four-wheel-drive system.

Toyota’s decision to skip a diesel motor stems from stricter emission norms, which make it challenging to achieve compliance with heavier body-on-frame SUVs. The introduction of hybrid and PHEV systems highlights Toyota’s focus on cleaner, more efficient powertrains for future off-roaders.

Rugged Design and Practical Cabin

Measuring 4575 mm in length, the Land Cruiser FJ is shorter than the Fortuner but maintains a strong SUV stance. Its design emphasises toughness, with bold body panels, cladding and a side-hinged tailgate carrying a spare wheel. The 215 mm ground clearance and robust approach angles underline its off-road intent, putting it in the same conceptual space as the Mahindra Scorpio N.

Inside, the FJ blends rugged functionality with modern features. The cabin uses durable materials suited for tough conditions and includes a 12.5-inch touchscreen and digital instrument cluster. Physical buttons and knobs remain, enhancing usability during off-road driving. The India-spec model will likely feature a two-row, five-seat layout, offering decent comfort though the rear seats may lack luxury touches such as a sunroof and rear AC vents.

India Production and Expected Pricing

Toyota plans to begin production of the Land Cruiser FJ (code: 900D) in August 2028, with an estimated annual output of 89,000 units. Around 40,000 of these will be exported to key markets such as the Middle East. Thanks to extensive localisation, the SUV’s starting price in India could be around Rs. 30 lakhs (ex-showroom), with hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants positioned higher.

The Land Cruiser FJ will serve as a new entry point into Toyota’s legendary Land Cruiser lineup – combining off-road strength, modern hybrid technology and a rugged personality that should appeal to both enthusiasts and adventure-seekers.
