Honda to launch 10 models by 2030, 0 Alpha EV to anchor India growth

Honda has revealed ambitious plans to introduce ten new models globally by 2030, including seven SUVs. The Japanese automaker’s upcoming 0 Series will play a pivotal role in this strategy, with the 0 Alpha SUV confirmed for launch in India. While the 0 Series is a fresh platform, parts sharing with the Honda Elevate is expected for cost and efficiency gains.

Global Rollout and India Focus

In Japan, Honda plans to launch all three 0 Series models by 2027, while other markets – including India – will be evaluated progressively. The 0 Alpha will not only be sold domestically but also exported from India to Japan and other Asian markets. This marks a significant milestone for Honda’s Indian operations as a potential export hub for EVs.

Battery Strategy and Local Partnerships

For the 0 Alpha, battery cells will be manufactured in Indonesia and transported to India, though Honda acknowledges logistical challenges due to battery size. In North America, the company relies on a joint venture with LG Energy Solution, while in China and Japan, it sources batteries locally. Honda’s diversified sourcing strategy underscores its regional customization approach to EV manufacturing.

Hybrid Expansion and R&D Growth

Currently, the Honda City e:HEV remains the brand’s sole hybrid offering in India. However, the automaker plans to expand its hybrid portfolio alongside the upcoming 0 Alpha EV. Honda’s R&D center in India is central to this vision, emphasising localisation and software development. The company collaborates with KPIT Technologies, employing around 2000 software engineers contributing to Honda’s global software initiatives.

Future Technologies and Market Adaptation

The 0 Alpha is expected to debut with Asimo OS, integrating advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). Honda will assess the Indian market’s readiness for autonomous driving features before introducing them. The company also reiterated its focus on performance and affordability, noting that pricing will reflect Indian consumer trends and value perceptions.

Production and Market Outlook

Honda’s Indian market share currently stands below 5%, which it attributes to past product gaps. The automaker aims to reclaim ground with its new SUV lineup, including both locally produced and imported models. Honda is also evaluating the reopening of its Greater Noida plant to expand production capacity. By aligning products to local demand and leveraging India’s technical expertise, Honda hopes to strengthen its foothold in one of the world’s fastest-growing automotive markets.
