Audi previews its minimalist 2026 F1 livery ahead of full team debut

Audi has offered the first official look at the colour scheme that will represent the brand when it enters Formula 1 in 2026. The company showcased the design – dubbed the R26 Concept – at its experience centre in Munich. While the concept model is not the final race car, it provides a clear preview of the visual identity Audi intends to bring to the grid when its debut F1 challenger is revealed in January 2026.

The concept features a restrained palette of red, black and silver, echoing the brand’s design language from its GT2, GT3 and GT4 customer racing programmes. Audi noted that the production race car will incorporate additional sponsor branding, making the final livery busier than the minimalist presentation on the R26.

During the unveiling, Audi CEO Gernot Döllner described Formula 1 as a pivotal step in the brand’s evolution, calling it a platform that will drive the company toward becoming “leaner, faster and more innovative.” He made it clear that Audi’s ambitions extend well beyond participation, stating the outfit aims to be in the title fight by the 2030 season.

Audi’s entry is built upon the existing Sauber team, which the company has acquired. The current driver lineup – Nico Hülkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto – will stay on through the team’s transition into a full works operation. Team principal Jonathan Wheatley will continue in his role, while former Ferrari leader Mattia Binotto joins as chief operating officer and chief technical officer. A key element of Audi’s programme is the development of an all-new in-house powertrain, a contrast to many rivals who will run engines supplied by established manufacturers.

The 2026 season promises to be a significant turning point for Formula 1, with fresh technical rules for both chassis and power units. Alongside Audi, American entrant Cadillac is set to join the grid with Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Pérez as its lead drivers. The campaign begins on March 8, 2026, at the Australian Grand Prix.
