Maruti Suzuki e Vitara EV launching in December with 500 km range
Maruti Suzuki has confirmed that its first all-electric SUV, the e Vitara, will debut in India this December. The announcement was made by company MD and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi during a press conference outlining financial results for the first half of FY2026. The e Vitara’s market introduction has faced multiple delays due to supply chain and software challenges, but the company is now gearing up for its long-awaited EV debut.
Maruti Suzuki’s First EV for India
The e Vitara marks a major milestone for Maruti Suzuki as it enters India’s fast-growing electric SUV segment. The model is being manufactured exclusively at the brand’s Hansalpur facility in Gujarat, which also handles exports. Since August, over 7000 units have already been shipped overseas, with the United Kingdom emerging as the biggest export destination.
Powertrain and Battery Options
Internationally, the e Vitara is offered with 49kWh and 61kWh battery packs. Both feature front-wheel-drive setups, while the larger unit also offers an AllGrip-e all-wheel-drive version with dual motors.
- 49kWh FWD: 144 HP, 344km WLTP range
- 61kWh FWD: 174 HP, 428km WLTP range
- 61kWh AWD: 184 HP, 394km WLTP range
For India, Maruti will first introduce the 61kWh FWD version, offering an ARAI-certified range exceeding 500km. The AWD configuration is expected to follow later, once production scales up.
Price Expectations and Rivals
The upcoming e Vitara is expected to be priced between Rs. 20 lakh and Rs. 25 lakh (ex-showroom). The higher-end 61kWh variant could cost around Rs. 25 lakh, while the base 49kWh model may start near Rs. 20 lakh.
When launched, it will take on several established and upcoming electric SUVs such as the Tata Curvv EV, MG ZS EV, Hyundai Creta Electric and Mahindra BE 6. The VinFast VF7 will also compete closely in terms of price and performance, though it is slightly larger in size.
